Gospel of John Reading Plan: 21 Days to Know Jesus Better

A Gospel of John reading plan can be as simple as reading one chapter a day for 21 days. Keep a Bible and a notebook nearby, ask what each chapter reveals about Jesus, and finish with an honest prayer. You do not need to understand every detail before you begin.

Why read the Gospel of John?

John introduces readers to Jesus through His words, signs, relationships, death, and resurrection. The book states its purpose in John 20:30–31: that readers would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life through His name. Keep that purpose in view as you read. This is more than a challenge to finish a book; it is an invitation to consider who Jesus is.

Your 21-day Gospel of John reading plan

Read the entire chapter listed for each day. The question gives you one place to begin reflecting; it does not summarize everything in the chapter.

Use a simple read, notice, respond rhythm

Read: Follow the whole chapter, slowing down where needed. Notice: Write one sentence about Jesus and one question you still have. Respond: Pray about what you read and identify one appropriate response, such as trusting His promise, confessing sin, or serving someone.

Keep verses connected to the surrounding conversation. If a phrase is confusing, read the paragraph again before looking for an explanation. Bring unresolved questions to a trusted pastor or Bible study leader.

Can a small group use this plan?

Yes. Read chapters 1–7 before the first meeting, 8–14 before the second, and 15–21 before the third. Ask each person to share one observation, one question, and one response. Our Bible study discussion questions can help keep the conversation focused on Scripture.

What if I miss a day?

Continue with the next unread chapter. Twenty-one days describes the reading schedule, not a deadline for God's approval. If a chapter needs two days, take two days. Understanding matters more than checking a box.
