How to Pray for Your Pastor: 7 Scripture-Based Prayers

Learning how to pray for your pastor can help you support the person who regularly teaches, leads, visits, and serves your church. You may see the Sunday sermon and a few meetings, while much of the work happens in conversations and responsibilities you never hear about. Thoughtful prayer keeps your attention on faithful ministry and the person carrying it.
You do not need confidential information to pray well. Scripture provides clear requests for wisdom, boldness, humility, love, and endurance. Use the seven prayers below across a week, or choose one before Sunday worship. Each is original wording shaped by the listed passage, and you can adapt it for your church's pastor or ministry team.
A biblical starting point for praying for leaders
In Ephesians 6:18–20, Paul asks for prayer that he will speak the gospel boldly. Even an experienced ministry leader asks others to pray. That gives a congregation a concrete starting point: ask God to help its pastor communicate the gospel faithfully and clearly.
If appropriate, ask your pastor for one public prayer request. Use what they choose to share, and avoid guessing about private family matters, church conflicts, or personal struggles.
Seven Scripture-based prayers for your pastor
1. Pray for faithful preaching
Read 2 Timothy 4:1–5. “Lord, help our pastor handle your Word faithfully. Give patience in teaching, courage to speak truth, and care for the people listening. Help us receive the message with attention and respond in obedience.” Include yourself in the prayer; listening well is part of the congregation's responsibility.
2. Pray for wisdom in leadership
Read James 1:5. “Father, give our pastor wisdom in decisions, conversations, and planning. Help them seek good counsel, understand what they need to learn, and choose what serves your people well.” A pastor faces ordinary decisions as well as weighty ones. Pray for discernment without insisting that your preferred choice is the only faithful outcome.
3. Pray for humility and steady character
Read 1 Peter 5:2–3. “God, help our pastor serve willingly and lead by example. Protect their heart from pride and selfish ambition. Give them the humility to receive correction and continue growing.” These qualities matter in visible leadership and in the quieter relationships where character is formed.
4. Pray for love in difficult conversations
Read 2 Timothy 2:24–25. “Lord, give our pastor patience, gentleness, and clarity when conversations are hard. Help them listen carefully and speak truth with care.” Pray for a church culture that makes honest conversation possible. You can contribute by addressing concerns directly and graciously rather than spreading assumptions.
5. Pray for their household and close relationships
Read Colossians 3:12–17. “Father, strengthen the relationships closest to our pastor. Give kindness, forgiveness, and meaningful time together. Help us honor their household's privacy and avoid placing unreasonable expectations on the people they love.” Adapt the prayer to what you actually know; pastors' households and life circumstances differ.
6. Pray for rest and sustainable service
Read Mark 6:30–32. “God, give our pastor space to rest and people who share the work. Help them recognize their limits and receive care. Teach us to serve faithfully instead of expecting one person to meet every need.” Ask how your congregation can protect planned time off and distribute responsibilities through its ministry teams.
7. Pray for boldness in sharing the gospel
Read Ephesians 6:18–20. “Lord, open opportunities for our pastor to speak of Christ clearly and courageously. Help our church welcome people, serve our community, and share the gospel with love.” Remember that the pastor is part of the church's witness; the congregation also has people to love and opportunities to serve.
Turn prayer into a weekly practice
Choose one prayer each day, or place a single reminder in your Bible for Saturday evening. Include other church leaders and volunteers over time. A short, regular practice can keep your prayers specific without becoming another complicated plan.
For shared prayer, agree on a few requests that can be spoken publicly. Our prayer meeting plan offers a format your group can adapt. Read the Scriptures together before using the prompts.
Pair encouragement with practical care
A note can say, “Your explanation of the passage helped me understand how to serve my neighbor this week.” Specific gratitude tells a pastor what encouraged you. A practical offer might be help with an agreed ministry task, a meal at a suitable time, or support that allows another leader to take a turn.
Our Pastor Appreciation Printable Booklet includes thank-you pages, ministry memories, children's contributions, congregation gratitude notes, and a church care plan. It is a print-and-write digital resource, so your congregation adds the personal content.
Begin with this week's ministry
Choose one passage and pray for your pastor before the next gathering. Then consider one way to listen well, encourage specifically, or share the work. Prayer can become a steady expression of care throughout the year.
