How to Comfort a Grieving Friend: Bible Verses and Practical Ways to Help

When someone you love is grieving, the hardest part is often not knowing what to do. Do you bring up the loss, or wait for them to mention it? Do you send a card, show up with food, or just sit with them in silence? There's no perfect formula, but there is wisdom — both practical and Scriptural — that can guide you.

Start With Presence, Not Answers

Job's friends did their best work in the first seven days, when they simply sat with him in silence (Job 2:13). It was only once they started explaining his suffering that they went wrong. Your presence — showing up, sitting close, being willing to not fix anything — matters more than having the right words.

What to Say (and What to Avoid)

Simple, honest words hold up better than trying to explain the loss: "I'm so sorry." "I don't have the words, but I'm here." "I'm praying for you." Avoid phrases that try to rush someone toward silver linings — "everything happens for a reason" or "they're in a better place" can feel dismissive, even when well-intentioned. Let grief be grief.

Bible Verses That Offer Real Comfort

Matthew 5:4

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

Psalm 34:18

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Romans 12:15

"Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep."

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

John 11:35

"Jesus wept."

This is the shortest verse in the Bible, and one of the most important for grief — even Jesus, standing steps away from raising Lazarus from the dead, wept alongside those who were grieving. Comfort doesn't require having the outcome figured out.

Revelation 21:4

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

Practical Ways to Help

  • Bring a specific meal on a specific day, rather than a vague "let me know if you need anything"
  • Handle a task — mowing the lawn, picking up kids, answering calls — without being asked
  • Mark your calendar for a check-in a month later, when most other support has faded
  • Give a keepsake that lets them sit with Scripture on their own time

If you're looking for a gift that offers ongoing comfort rather than a one-time gesture, our Jesus and Mental Health Printables collection includes a Scripture-based grief guide built to sit beside someone through the season after the funeral, not just the day of it.
